Awards Presented at
FSCT Annual Meeting
● A number of awards were presented as
part of the Federation of Societies for
Coatings Technology (FSCT) 80th
annual meeting.
The FSCT Distinguished Service
Award was presented to Gail Pollano,
of the New England Society, in recognition
of her contributions to the
progress of FSCT while serving as
president of the organization in 2001-
2002.
The third annual John A. Gordon
best paper award was presented to
Mohamad D. Shalati, James H. McBee
and William J. Degooyer, Akzo Nobel
Resins, Louisville, KY; Ferry Thys,
Akzo Nobel Resins, b.v., Bergen op
Zoom, The Netherlands; and Leo van
der Ven and Rene T.M. Leijzer, Akzo
Nobel Coatings Research, The
Netherlands, for their paper “High-
Performance non-isocyanate coatings
accelerated all acrylic (AAA).”
Coatings Education Foundation presented
Roon Foundation Awards to
“Porous coatings from latex blends of
large-hard and small-soft particles”—
Yue Ma, Benjamin J. Wiley, H.T.
Davis, and L.E. Scriven, University of
Minnesota, Department of Chemical
Engineering and Materials Science,
Minneapolis, MN (first prize);
“Mechanism of zinc oxide instability in
latex paints”—Michael Diebold,
Charles R. Bettler, and David M.
Mukoda, E.I. duPont de Nemours,
Wilmington, DE (second place); and
“Quantitative spectroscopy to determine
the effects of photodegradation
on a model polyester-urethane coating”—
Stuart A. Croll and A.D. Skaja,
North Dakota State University,
Department of Polymers and
Coatings, Fargo, ND (third place).
The A.L. Hendry/Southern Society
Award was presented to Jeffery M.
Stubbs, University of New Hampshire,
for his paper, “Fundamental studies on
morphology control for latex systems
with application to waterborne coatings:
the effect of polymer radical mobility
in latex particles during polymerization.”
A.F. Voss/Abel Banov Awards were
awarded to “Chemical resistance of self-
crosslinking emulsion coatings for interior
plastics”—Chicago Society, presented
by Brian Hanrahan, Kyowa Hakko
USA and “Properties of coatings based
on carbamate functional binders”—
Detroit Society, presented by Latoska
Price, Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc.
An award for the best poster was
given to Jinzhen Shi, University of
Missouri-Rolla, for “Surface modified
alumina for ink-jet paper coatings.” ●
